CALIFORNIA CUTS NUMBER OF UNINSURED

"California cuts number of uninsured" was the headline for the San Jose Mercury News Editorial on July 15, 2014." The editorial iself stated that California "has cut the percent of residents without health insurance in half since last summer, from 22 percent to 11 percent of the population." The editorial then blurts out that "the percentage of uninsured Americans has dropped from 18 to 13.4 percent in the same time"and "would have dropped even more if all the states were taking advantage of the Affordable Care Act's health exchange program."

Comment: these statements show how correctly quoted statistics can cause misunderstanding and to all intents and purposes lie outright. I personally queried ten doctors at a local hospital. It turns out that none of them accept Covered California since the plan sticks it to them

  1. The comments by the San Jose Mercury News editorial also reveal now naieve the editors were -- the upshot of the story is that it's now possible to buy health care insurance without actual coverage by doctors. - rlw, ed.

  2. How does California's ACA Exchange compare with that of other states? If you were choosing a state for medical practice, would this issue determine your choice?

  3. This question has been submitted on an anonymous basis. The answer is dependent upon the type of practice involved. In general, it can be stated with reasonable medical probability that California's ACA program is competitive with most other states and that which state one selects for practice depends on the type of practice one seeks, e.g., as part of a foundation, or independent contractor, or small group, etc. The real question is who'll handle your contract negotiations for fee-for-service or salary? If it's going to be the CEO or CFO of a foundation or HMO or other organization that makes its own contracts with varied sources of patients, you've already lost out no matter which state you 're in -- so your first decision should be to decide who'll handle your contract negotiations.
